Proposal

My idea for a semester topic is to take the art movement of Surrealism and apply to different themes that affect us from day to day. Using what I have learned from my research on Surrealism and abstract art I want to create pieces that are living satires on the issues. The themes/topics that I want to explore are war, the soul, economy, family, and fear. I have never dealt with the topic of Surrealism or the major concepts behind what formed the movement but through conceptual development of the topics into pieces I would be able to have a better understanding. Imagery will play a major role in the construction of each piece as will conveying the concept through a strong composition.

  1. Each topic within your overall focus has tons of information you can pull from. Think about ways you can incorporate elements of each. You seem to have a general understanding of the topics that served as inspiration for the art movement itself. How can you take those topics and apply them to your life?

  2. i think adopting a surrealist style should be really interesting and allow you to be really free and expressive. It should be impressive to see how you are able to take surrealism, a very abstract style and apply a strong message like war. Its an interesting contrast to take such a free flowing. dream-like style and apply such heavy meanings to it.

  3. Many of your sub topics (economy, war, fear, etc.) can be strongly connected together and you might want to combine them into one project. Since this is Surrealism, definitely consider strong imagery and how to torc it into bizarre ways. This definitely can have a psychedelic flair to it. It is in your best interest in my opinion to play up the odd nature of Surrealism through your choice of image and movements.

  4. I think surrealism expressed through animation is a strong idea, since when I imagine surrealism, the images that come to MY mind are in motion. I think of strange motions that may be hard to obtain without utilizing animation. I think you should really try to put yourself "out there" with strange objects and characters, so that they are almost unrecognizable.
